Mama Dolce founder Jane Visram shares when she had her lightbulb moment to create a luxury, free-from ice cream

Jane Visram and her husband Justin both have to watch what they eat. Not because they’re trying to get beach-body ready; if they’re not careful, they could end up suffering the after-effects for a long time to come. Both have common food allergies and intolerances and have done for several years.


Despite the UK free-from market doubling in the past five years, it’s rare for Jane and Justin to feel included when it comes time to share a dessert. When you have to be careful about which foods contain allergens, it really can limit your choice. Jane recalls, how once they were both in a restaurant and the only thing on the menu they both could eat, was a fruit salad. Hardly the most tantalising choice for the ol’ taste buds!



However, it was when Jane was at the theatre that she had her lightbulb moment. During the interval, when all her friends were buying those cute, little pots of ice cream, well, there wasn’t a free-from option for Jane. Like so many times before, she felt left out.


But if free-from ice cream isn’t going to come to the theatre, then Jane is going to bring it to them.


Though the global pandemic has placed a back-burner on these plans, it doesn’t mean she can’t share the fruits of her labour with us right now. Mama Dolce has six bursting-with-flavour ice cream recipes ready for production. After a successful crowdfunding campaign, our supporters will try Mama Dolce before its official release!



Whatever the new normal ends up being, let’s hope you’ll soon see Mama Dolce not only in your homes but when you’re in restaurants, hotels, cinemas and of course, the theatre.
